How to choose an IPTV provider: a 9-point checklist

Choosing an IPTV provider comes down to nine questions. Ask them before you pay and you will avoid almost every bad one.

Most people choose an IPTV provider on price and regret it within a month. The service that lasts is the one that answers nine simple questions correctly — and you can test all of them on a trial line before spending anything.

1. Will they give you a trial?

A short test line is the single best filter. If a provider will not let you check the picture on your own device and connection, walk away.

2. Does the EPG actually load?

A working electronic programme guide is the difference between a playlist and a TV service. Check that the next seven days are filled in, not just "now and next".

3. What happens at peak time?

Test during the evening when the network is busiest. A provider that streams perfectly at midday and stutters at 8 p.m. has not solved capacity.

4. How many screens do you get?

Confirm the number of simultaneous streams, not the number of devices you can install on. Two people watching at once needs two screens.

5. Which devices are supported?

Streaming sticks, TV boxes, smart TVs, media streamers and phones should all work with the same login. If a provider only supports one app, that is a limitation you will feel later.

6. How fast is support?

Send a real question before you buy and time the answer. Fast, specific replies to a sales question usually mean fast replies after you pay.

7. Is payment traceable?

Prefer a provider that gives a receipt and a clear refund policy for failed activation. Untraceable payment with no receipt is a warning sign.

8. Is the pricing honest?

Long plans can be genuine value, but be wary of "lifetime" offers and prices far below the market with no explanation.

A serious provider is clear that they resell access to playlists and do not own or host the channels. Vagueness here usually means trouble later.

Putting it together

Score a provider against these nine points on a trial. Anything that fails more than two is not worth a long plan. The right provider is rarely the cheapest — it is the one that still answers you in month six.
